Abstract

The concept of self-determination has long been a fundamental
principle in international law, recognizing the right of states to govern themselves without external interference. This right is enshrined in various international treaties and declarations, such as the United Nations Charter and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. However, the interpretation and scope of this right have been the subject of debate and controversy. This article explores the concept of self-determination in international law, focusing on states’ rights to determine their political status and pursue economic, social, and cultural development. It examines the historical background of self-determination, including its origins in the decolonization era and its evolution in modern international law.
